Americus residents are being alerted to a special sanitary sewer test coming soon. The question now is when.

Originally, the plan was for a smoke test with the help of the Kansas Rural Water Association on Tuesday and Wednesday. The project has now been delayed until further notice due to heavy rain in Americus over the weekend. The ground needs to be dry for the test to be effective.

Once the project starts, the goal is to find defects that could affect treatment and collections operations. Residents are told they may see smoke coming from sewer vents on buildings, from the ground or other areas. The smoke will be white in color. It's non-toxic, non-staining and odorless. It should not enter homes or buildings unless there is defective plumbing or dry drain taps, so residents are encouraged to pour at least a quart of water down drains that are not normally used.

If residents have questions or if smoke does get inside a building, call Americus City Hall at 620-443-5655.
