Battle of the Badges begins at noon Wednesday, and the Red Cross says there are a lot of open slots throughout the three-day drive.

Spokesman Susan Faler says nearly half the roughly 430 appointment slots are still open at this time. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred.

The drive is typically a good-natured competition, but Faler says it also showcases the work law enforcement, firefighters and the Red Cross will do together in emergency situations.

To set an appointment, call 800-RED CROSS or go online to www.redcrossblood.org. You can also download the RapidPass mobile app to speed the process.

As has been the case in years past, blood donors can vote for their favorite agency, whether it's Emporia Fire -- the returning champion -- as well as Emporia Police, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office or a new participant this year, ESU Police and Safety. Donors also get a Battle of the Badges T-shirt and a $5 Amazon gift card.

Battle of the Badges will take place at Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church from Wednesday through Friday. Hours are 12-6 pm Wednesday, 8 am to 2 pm Thursday and 9 am to 3 pm Friday.
