Emporia native Ahren Thornton has a new leadership position in the US Navy.

The Navy commander is now the commanding officer of the Training Squadron 28 Rangers based at Corpus Christi, Texas, after a ceremony last Thursday. Thornton relieved Commander John Kollar during a ceremony last week.

Thornton graduated from the Naval Academy in 2001. He has had numerous roles in the Navy, including aviation safety officer, pilot training officer, aircraft division officer, landing signal officer, operations administration officer, safety officer and readiness officer. He has received the Meritorious Service Medal, four Air Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals and three Navy Achievement Medals during his career.

Thornton reported to VT-28, as it's officially called, as executive officer in August 2018. The unit trains Navy and Marine pilots to fly the T-6B Texan II aircraft.
