Firefighters nationwide are urging residents to develop and practice fire escape plans, and the Emporia Fire Department is no exception as Fire Prevention Week continues.

This week's theme is "Not All Heroes Wear Capes: Plan and Practice Your Escape." On KVOE's Morning Show on Wednesday, Emporia Fire Marshal Reason Bradford said a fire escape plan needs several components. A basic one is just how to get out of a room if needed.

People, especially families, need to set a gathering place near their home in case they have a fire. Bradford says this will make it easier to account for everybody in the home.

In addition, people need to make sure batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work properly. Detectors need to be tested monthly, and fire departments nationwide will encourage people to "change their clocks, change their batteries" when Daylight Saving Time begins Nov. 3.
