Brave cyclists confronted the freezing weather Saturday morning with smiles on their faces for the third annual Lap the Lakes Gravel Grinder.

Lap the Lakes gets its unique name for the course route that it follows. There are two options - the 100km and the 200km - which pass by local lakes such as Lake Kahola, Council Grove Lake, Reading Lake, East Lake, as well as several rivers and creeks.

Married couple Cassie and Rich Schultheis biked the 100km route. They both are participating for the beautiful scenery of the Flint Hills, but Cassie says its also something more for her.

Both riders are familiar with the world of gravel grinders, but Rich says this one is different.

Funds raised from Lap the Lakes will be split 50/50 going toward the Emporia Police Benefit Association and Camp Alexander. More information on this event can be found online at lapthelakes.org.
