Local voters had another opportunity to familiarize themselves with Emporia City Commission Candidates ahead of the Nov. 5 general election Tuesday evening.

Flint Hills Technical College hosted the first of two candidate forums put on by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Emporia League of Women Voters Tuesday. Incumbents Rob Gilligan and Becky Smith were joined by commission hopefuls Joni Austenfeld, Todd Maddox, Lisa Brittain and current USD 253 Board of Education member Susan Brinkman.

The candidates tackled a number of topics ranging from city infrastructure, affordable housing and economic development. Candidates also fielded questions from the audience including the major issues facing Emporia in coming years and the topic of homelessness in the local community.

This question hit close to home for SOS representative Lucas Moody who was in attendance for the forum. Moody, who has a background in working within the homeless sector, says he is happy to see this topic being openly discussed amongst the candidates and the community.

The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce Government Matters Committee and the Emporia League of Women will hold their final forum Thursday evening featuring Emporia School Board candidates at the college. The forum will start at 6:30 pm and will be live-streamed on KVOE-TV at KVOE.com and ValuNET Fiber channel 3.
