Organizers of Emporia's new bike share initiative have been pleased with the community's response in the program's first month.

The program is a three-way partnership between Healthier Lyon County, the Emporia Police Department and Lyon County Sheriff's Office. EPD Sergeant Lisa Sage says in just the first month there has been a total of 313 bike rentals.

Healthier Lyon County Grant Manager Daphne Mertens says besides promoting healthier lifestyles, the program also appears to be promoting a sense of togetherness.

Mertens tells KVOE News they will have one of the bike share bikes on display at their annual interactive health fest this Saturday. However, as the weather begins to change so will the bike's availability.

According to Mertens, the bikes will sadly be going away for a short time following daylight savings. This is being done to protect the bikes and the blue tooth equipment at each bike station from the frigid winter conditions quickly approaching.

Thankfully the bikes will return in the springtime following spring forward.
