The Kansas Turnpike Authority says a Topeka man was hurt in Saturday’s crash near the highway’s Emporia service area.

The crash developed around 11:40 am when a southbound car driven by 29-year-old Stephen Tate rear-ended a van, likely at highway speed, driven by 56-year-old Armando Torres of Williamsburg, Iowa. Authorities have not said why Tate’s car crashed into Torres’ van about two miles northeast of the service area and seven miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate.

Tate suffered suspected minor injuries but went to Newman Regional Health for observation and possible medical treatment. Torres was not hurt.

Emporia Fire took one person to Newman Regional Health after a crash on the Kansas Turnpike outside Emporia on Saturday.

The ambulance call came after a crash at mile marker 134, seven miles northeast of the Emporia gate and two miles northeast of the Emporia service area, around 11:30 am. One person was brought to Emporia for treatment while three others declined medical treatment.

The Turnpike Authority says two southbound vehicles were involved. Further details are pending.

12:35 pm Saturday: Details pending following injury accident on Kansas Turnpike Saturday

Information is scarce following a reported injury accident on the Kansas Turnpike late Saturday morning. 

Emergency crews were called to mile marker 134.6 southbound shortly after 11:30 am.  According to the Kansas Turnpike Authority, the accident allegedly involved two vehicles.
