Veterans from around the area and students from three Lyon County high schools are home -- simultaneously tired and invigorated -- after participating in Honor Flight this week.

Veterans on the trip, including Judd Everitt, were awed by the experience. Everitt served in the Army from 1971 to 1973 and said friends from Greenwood County encouraged him to go. The best part of the trip?

Ron Slaymaker joined the Army at the end of the Korean War.

Veteran Steve Coble was in the Air Force during Vietnam. He says seeing the Vietnam War Memorial was emotional for him, but another feeling came to him while he was there.

Hartford student Taylor Kelly says she wanted to go because both of her parents are veterans.

Olpe student Heather Swogar wanted to be involved because her grandfather was a veteran. She was taken by the goodbye they received at Baltimore's airport.

Twenty-three veterans made the trip alongside 21 students, along with coordinators and medical staff. This was the seventh Honor Flight trip for Southern Lyon County, but it was the first for North Lyon County. Northern Heights student Sophia Arens says a documentary in middle school set the stage for her participation.

Northern Heights Principal Peggy Fort says the experience went beyond her expectations, thanks to the groundwork done by USD 252 administrators.

Plans will develop for USD 251's next Honor Flight in the coming weeks.

As the North Lyon County and Southern Lyon County students get back into their normal routines, another area district is in the final preparation stages for its own Honor Flight. USD 245 Southern Coffey County takes off for Washington, DC, on Thursday.
