Repair work has wrapped up on a waterline on West 12th Avenue which has led to traffic being detoured through the majority of the day Wednesday.

According to Public Works Director Dean Grant crews completed work on the line shortly before 2 pm Wednesday afternoon. Traffic is now open in both directions in the area.

Underground Utilities crews have been planning for several days to fix an old, leaky water line between Garfield and Grand with water bubbling up to the surface for nearly a week. Grant has stressed the line in question is not the one installed last year, but crews have had to cut out a portion of the pavement installed earlier this year to get to the leak and make repairs.

Grant says the leak was caused by a failed sitting on the line.  Utilities crews still have repairs to complete on the section of the road which was cut out.  Grant anticipates that work to be wrapped up by Friday at the latest.

Additionally, crews are working to repair a water valve issue at 12th and Neosho. Traffic in the intersection will be closed until further notice.

Repair work Wednesday comes about as Public Works is getting ready to do several water valve repairs in southeast Emporia on Friday. Water will be shut off in a box involving Quail Creek from Pheasant Ridge to East and East from Logan Avenue to Kansas Avenue. Water could be off from around 9 am to 5 pm, depending on the condition of the valves.

Public Works says these repairs will not affect operations at Logan Avenue Elementary because the school will be closed that day. Water will be off for residents of Eastgate Plaza.
