Two weeks ago, Emporia's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1980 was in a serious financial hole.

Failure to file certain paperwork with the Internal Revenue Service over a four-year period led to a roughly $20,000 bill for the post. Now, Post Commander Michael White says things are looking up.

White says a recent donation total isn't available yet, but he says the number is substantial with many coming anonymously.

White joined KVOE's Newsmaker 2 segment Thursday with an update. He says the situation started with an apparently inadvertent -- but unfortunate -- inability to send out certain employee tax documents. He says the IRS also understands the VFW's situation, so a repayment plan is an option and the "D-Day" White had mentioned for a decision on selling the building is getting pushed back.

The property is listed at around $158,000, but White says a sale would be a last-resort move.

White says the VFW is working with an outside accountant, which is also helping both the research process and the ongoing discussions with the IRS.

This upcoming Saturday, Just Passing Through will perform starting at 8 pm and the post will wrap up a gun raffle. Cover charge is $10. On the 23rd, there will be a disc golf tournament -- Veterans for Vets -- at Peter Pan Park. Registration cost is $25. Additional plans are developing for a family-friendly event and a band that day as well.

For more information about what's being called the Save the V drive, call White at 785-430-8095 or the post directly at 342-9864.
