The Osage County Sheriff's Office says a resident received a mailed letter from Portugal saying he had won the lottery. The "final notification letter" was stamped with the words "US Government Approved Washington DC."

The Sheriff's Office says scams typically pick up around the holidays. This is different from the phone scams that ask you to either withdraw money to be sent somewhere or to buy prepaid money cards. Authorities say you should never give out personal information like date of birth or Social Security number, and you should never verify any personal or financial information about you.
