Traffic adjustments in place for downtown Emporia's West Sixth Avenue water main project Chuck Samples/KVOE News

Eastbound traffic using Sixth Avenue to get through downtown Emporia will have a significant traffic pattern shift this week.

The city of Emporia is starting work to install a new water main in the 10 block of West Sixth between Commercial and Merchant. As of Tuesday morning, eastbound traffic will be constricted to one lane and pushed to the center turn lane in that block. No left or northbound turns onto Merchant will be allowed, although drivers can use the outside lane to go right or south only onto Merchant.

Westbound traffic is also adjusted, although not to the level of eastbound traffic for now. Westbound drivers can use the normal lanes, although the inside lane will have to be used for turns south onto Merchant.

Merchant Street traffic is currently unaffected.

The city has not said how long the project could last.
