For the 9th consecutive year, hundreds of runners took to Walnut Elementary school for the annual Walnut Turkey Day Dash.

In its short history, the annual race has quickly become a staple of Thanksgiving activities in Emporia. Walnut Principal Jami Dakin says she is proud of how warmly the community has embraced the annual race.

Despite bitter temperatures and light drizzle through the morning hours right around 600 individuals took to the starting line this year. The first individual across the finish line was Kyler True who finished the race with a time just over 16 minutes.

As has been the case for the past several years competitors were not limited to just the local community. Racers from Colorado, Louisianna, Missouri, Texas and even Canada took part in the race.

All proceeds from the event will benefit students at Walnut Elementary School.
