Emporia's downtown sanitary sewer project reaching midway point City of Emporia map

Emporia's downtown sanitary sewer project continues, and City Engineer Jim Ubert says the work has moved well so far.

Ubert says the contract team is about 40 percent done with the overall project. He also says there is a lot of work ahead.

Most of the work has taken place in downtown alleys to minimize the impact on businesses. Ubert says there will still be some business-by-business impact downtown, mostly with short-term limitations or stoppages in water service, as the work continues into late spring or early summer 2020.

Much of the early work dealt with extra investigations with a lot of sagging pipes or "root intrusions" in the system, followed by pre-lining activity and point repairs.

Work started in April. The overall project affects an area from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks north to 14th and from Constitution east to Lakeview.
