Joy is part of the holiday season, and it was part and parcel of Tuesday's Match Day check presentation at Flinthills Mall.

Emporia Community Foundation Director Becky Nurnberg was pleased to announce a record fundraising total of $286,300.42. Last year's previous record was just under $241,000.

Nurnberg says Match Day is designed to help smaller nonprofits, especially those with operating budgets under $150,000.

Twenty-five community partners were involved on Veterans Day, and Nurnberg said more donors contributed larger amounts than before despite wintry conditions that day. This was also the first time six charitable foundations and trusts combined for a $60,000 matching pool.

Tuesday's announcement means Match Day's six-year total is now above $1.1 million. It also was the first year a participating group received over $30,000 in donations. Team Schnak got over $33,000, thanks to public donations and the group's share of the matching pool.
