Emporia Fire Crews made quick work of a minor vehicle fire early Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were called to 1622 Center Street, next to Hammond Park, shortly after noon for a reported vehicle fire. Fire Batallion Chief Eron Steinlage says upon arrival crews discovered heavy smoke coming from the engine compartment of a 1980 Mercury Zephyr but no flames.

Firefighters had the smoke, and any potential flames handled roughly five minutes after arriving on scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, however, Steinlage says the car is likely a total loss.

No injuries were reported.
