One person was killed and five others were hurt in a head-on crash near Lyndon on Thursday evening.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a northbound pickup driven by 20-year-old Darian Hess of Topeka tried to pass a commercial motor vehicle on US Highway 75 but didn't have enough space to do so before coming up against oncoming traffic. His truck then crashed head-on into a southbound pickup driven by 33-year-old Amber Walters of Lyndon shortly before 8 pm.

A passenger in the Hess truck, 24-year-old Jennarene Hawkins of Burlingame, was killed in the wreck, while Hess was taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka with suspected serious injuries.

Everybody in the Walters truck went to Stormont-Vail for treatment, with Walters and 9-year-old Daymian Walters of Lyndon suffering suspected serious injuries. Two other youngsters, 2-year-old Serenity Qujnonez and 1-year-old Cherish Roney, suffered possible injuries but were still taken to the hospital.

Hawkins and Daymian Walters were not wearing seatbelts when the crash happened.
