A Texas man and his passenger were involved in a single-vehicle injury accident in Chase County just minutes before midnight.

The crash occurred on the Kansas Turnpike at mile marker 114, just 13 miles southwest of the Emporia gate and 2 miles northeast of the Flint Hills cattle pens exit. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Tedros Lakew, a 37-year-old male from Dallas Texas, drove his 2013 Volvo semi off the right shoulder and lost control, bringing the car back onto the roadway and jackknifed into the guard rail.

Berhane Telke, the passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Newman Regional Health with possible injuries after concerns of pain as a result of the crash. Lakew requested medical attention on the scene two hours after the incident but was not transported to the hospital.

Southbound traffic was partly blocked for around three hours after the incident occurred.
