Local runners kicked off their weekend with a chilly, yet rewarding event Saturday morning.

The second annual Big Chill 5k, 10k and a half marathon launched at 8 am from downtown Emporia. This year's race raised nearly $6,000 for Communities in Schools of Mid America here in Emporia.

According to CIS Communications Director and Big Chill Organizer Victoria Partridge, those funds will be used to support CIS' mission of removing any and all barriers between students and their education.
