The Emporia State Theatre Department took local theatregoers on an auditory adventure with a classic Christmas tale Saturday.

Local residents were welcomed into the Karl C. Bruder Theatre for the ESU Theater Department's fourth annual "A Christmas Carol Radio Drama." The show is very unique and differs from other ESU performances for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the performance is presented in a radio format seeing cast members trade in costumes and props for just microphones and a script. Secondly, the performance is the one time of year where ESU theatre students are joined onstage by faculty and staff of the university.

This included ESU Theater Professor Dennis Turney who portrayed the starring role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Turney says he thinks of his students as his own children and having the opportunity to perform beside them makes him feel like a proud father.

ESU Theater Director Jim Bartruff says they enjoy doing this performance each year as the story, written by Charles Dickens over 170 years ago, contains many life lessons that are still prudent to this day.

Admission into the show was free, however, donations for Corky's Cupboard to help feed ESU students were accepted. The performance generated $150 in monetary donations and two cases of non-perishable food donations.
