Emporia State University's winter commencement activities got underway Friday evening as close to 250 graduate students received their degrees.

White Auditorium was filled Friday evening with ESU staff, students and some very special guests including Kansas Board of Regent's member Allen Schmidt who shared some inspiring words with the class of 2019. Before the ceremonies began, Schmidt took time to speak with KVOE News and says for the graduates this is a time for pride, celebration and thankfulness.

Schmidt says he is noticing education has begun turning towards a more applied learning approach both at the technical and two-year levels but also at four-year institutions as well. He says the benefit of this approach at the four-year level is it gives students more time for learning their craft to be as successful as possible in their chosen fields.

Winter commencement activities will conclude Saturday morning as undergraduate students are awarded their degrees. Commencement will begin at 9:30 am inside White Auditorium with doors opening 90 minutes beforehand.
