As Saturday marked the official 150th anniversary of the Emporia Public Library, Jan. 1, 2020 will see some massive changes for the Emporia institution.

During the official anniversary party held at the Library Saturday afternoon, Library Director Robin Newell made a major announcement.

Newell says the board's decision is one of many ways the library is looking to break down barriers between local residents and literacy. According to Newell there are currently 10,000 individuals with Emporia Public Library cards and of that number roughly 1,200 are currently suspended due to overdue fines.

Newell says the board decided to address that issue as well.

The announcement was just one of the highlights of the exciting celebration Saturday which offered an abundance of activities for children including face painting, button making, cake and a free give-away of t-shirts commemorating the 150th anniversary. The celebration also culminated a year-long list of events including a special speaker series commemorating a similar series which was the library's first featured event over 100 years ago.
