Two area school teachers have been honored for their work as first-year educators.

Elly Dice, a sixth-grade teacher at North Lyon County, was named a Kansas Horizon Award teacher. Dice says her approach in the classroom is rooted in how she develops relationships with her students -- and her time as a student.

Dice was interested in teaching for a long time, but she began as a dispatcher for Emporia while she was taking classes and was promoted to supervisor and trainer. However, she didn't feel she was on God's track for her.

Also honored was Christina Frost at USD 417's Council Grove Elementary School.

The program is sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education and recognizes first-year teachers that "have performed in a way to distinguish themselves as outstanding." Honorees will gather at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network annual conference Feb. 14 in Topeka to get their awards.
