As democrats throughout Kansas prepare for a party-run primary election later this year, State Democratic Party Secretary George Hanna paid a visit to the Lyon County Democrats' monthly meeting Monday evening to update the process.

Hanna was the featured speaker at the meeting and took the time to share many of the advancements the party has taken recently since deciding to take on the primary. Hanna explains the party run primary will be held in place of a traditional presidential preference caucus for Kansas Democrats this year.

Hanna refers to the party run primary as a "field of dreams" endeavor.

According to Hanna, placing more ballots in the hands of Kansas Democrats will help drastically increase Kansas' profile on a national level. Hanna says "now every delegate counts" and even if someone is running a "second or third place campaign by the time Kansas rolls around we are much more significant."

Speaking of the 2020 Presidential election, Hanna says several recent issues may play a factor when it comes time for the final vote. One issue, however, Hanna feels will not be a factor are the current impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

Hanna says the reasoning for his feeling is that he believes Trump may not be around once the general election arrives in November.

Additionally, Hanna anticipates the ongoing conflict with Iran, which developed after the US assassination of Iranian General Qaseem Soleimani earlier this month, will also be high on the list of talking points. Hanna says the conflict is an issue which not only affects both the U.S. and Iran but also carries global ramifications as well.

The Democratic primary will be held on May 2 and Hanna says any and all Kansas Democrats planning to vote by mail need to be registered by Feb. 1. For more information on the Kansas Democratic primary visit Kansasdems.org.
