Emporia ranks sixth on list of safest Kansas cities National Council for Home Safety and Security logo

Emporia fares well in a recent study of the state's safest cities.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security puts Emporia sixth overall. Using numbers of 28 violent crimes and almost 430 property crimes, the council says Emporia has a crime rate of 18.5 per 1,000 residents. With 50 law enforcement employees listed in the report, the law enforcement per 1,000 residents is just over 2.

The council used the 2018 FBI Uniform Crime Report stats, taking out cities that did not submit a complete report along with cities with populations under 10,000. The rankings factor in total number of crimes, number of crimes per 1,000 residents and "police adequacy" or the total number of crimes divided by the number of police employees.

McPherson topped the list of 22 cities listed. Topeka was last. Click here for a link to the report.
