Emporia and Osage City will benefit from Community Development Block Grants as announced this week by the Kansas Department of Commerce.

Emporia will get $300,000 to rehabilitate 14 homes for both owners and rentals. The city is providing $88,400 in matching money. The city has not said where the rehab projects will take place.

Osage City is getting $600,000 to make sanitary sewer improvements across town. The city is using nearly $1 million in funding through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment as the match money for this project.

The block grant program lets the Department of Commerce pass federal funds to cities and counties. Project applications must benefit low- or moderate-income residents; remove or prevent slum or blight conditions; or eliminate urgent needs created by disasters when local funds are not available.

In total, 39 Kansas communities are receiving nearly $17.5 million through this round of block grants.
