The Regional Development Association of East Central Kansas' monthly board meeting Friday focused on how Emporia can diversify current industry sectors.

The RDA held a conference call with Research On Investment (ROI) to discuss a recent target industry analysis snapshot conducted by ROI. The purpose of the analysis is to single out growth sectors in the local community through a number of national and global factors that seek to add to the region’s industries, the supply chain or expand the economic base with related and emerging industries.

The report identified three specific areas with the most potential for Emporia to "link into." The list included expanding from just petfood manufacturing into the full food manufacturing supply chain, pursuing additional companies that specialize in precision products and further investigating smaller niche opportunities for business development.

Heerman says now the question becomes where do you decide to focus your resources?

Heerman says the information was very useful as the RDA prepares for a strategic planning retreat later this month.

Eventually, conversations shifted towards the topic of the Kansas Framework for Growth a comprehensive strategy centered on accelerating economic growth within Kansas. Heerman explains a central focus of the program is growing the state workforce and keeping Kansans in Kansas.

According to data presented during the meeting, the top five states which draw the majority of workforce are Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and California. Heerman believes the major draw is the employment opportunities available in those regions.

Heerman says the state has "really stepped up their efforts" by restaffing in terms of business recruitment and by bringing back several programs such as Kansas Main Street and several international programs.

In other business, board members received the traditional monthly reports and held one executive session. The RDA will hold its next meeting in March.
