CORONAVIRUS: Second round of mail ballots coming this week to Kansas Democrats taking part in presidential primary Lyon County Democrats logo

Lyon County Democrats hoping to take part in the upcoming presidential primary will still get their chance to do so, but they will have to make an adjustment along the way.

Because of coronavirus, Kansas Democrats announced a major change to the presidential primary last week, eliminating any in-person voting and going exclusively to a mail ballot. Lyon County party chair Ray Rogers says one set of ballots has already gone out, with another batch going out Tuesday. Rogers says COVID-19 has changed the atmosphere surrounding the primary.

The primary is May 2 and all ballots have to be received by then. Voters will rank their top five candidates. Those receiving less than 15 percent of all first-choice votes will then have those ballots reallocated to the next "preferred viable candidate."

The changes to the primary were announced before the nationwide Democrat party announced the national convention has been pushed from mid-July to the week of August 17 -- right before the Republicans' national convention the week of August 24.
