Road closures are likely to remain in place in portions of the KVOE listening area through the remainder of the weekend, however, river levels continue to drop at a rapid pace.  

One area gauge remains in a flood warning at this time.  The warning for the Cottonwood River near Emporia continues until Sunday afternoon.   

The river was last observed at 21.95 above the 20 foot flood stage. Current projections show the river dropping below flood stage by 1 pm Sunday afternoon.  

The list of road closures remains short at this time. 

Current closures include: 

*800 block of Road 165
*700 and 800 blocks of Road 160

*1400 block of Road J
*1600 block of Road G
*1600 block of Road H

The Chase County Sheriff's Office reports several closures on rural roadways in the county, however, traffic is not being impacted.   Barricades will likely remain in place through Monday according to the Chase County Sheriff's Office and Lyon County Road and Bridge.

2 pm Saturday: UPDATE: River-based flood warnings nearing an end; Road closures continue

Flood concerns continue to drop along with area river levels Saturday. 

River-based flood warnings have expired for two area river gauges including the Cottonwood River near Cottonwood Falls and Plymouth.  One warning remains in effect for the Cottonwood near Emporia until Sunday afternoon.  

As of 12:30 pm Saturday the River was observed at 21.46 ft above flood stage of 20 ft. The river is forecasted to begin dropping and may fall below the flood stage by 1 pm Sunday.  

A countywide flood warning continues for Chase County until 10 pm Saturday. 

So far the list of road closures has been short. 

Current closures include: 

*800 block of Road 165
*700 and 800 blocks of Road 160
*1600 block of Road G
*1600 block of Road H

8 am Saturday: Area river levels dropping; road closures continue 

Despite water levels beginning to decrease, barricades remain in place on several area roadways

The Lyon County Emergency Communications Center announced Friday evening closures were in effect for the following roadways: 

*800 block of Road 165
*700 and 800 blocks of Road 160
*1600 block of Road G
*1600 block of Road H

The Chase County Sheriff's Office reports several closures on rural roadways in the county, however, traffic is not being impacted.   

A river based flood warning continues for the Cottonwood River in Emporia until Sunday afternoon.  As of 7:30 am Saturday, the river was observed at 20.9 ft above the 20 ft flood stage.   The river is projected to crest at 22 ft Saturday afternoon and should drop back below the flood stage Saturday evening.    

A separate warning remains in effect for the Cottonwood River at Cottonwood Falls until 7:45 pm Saturday.  The river was at 9.8 ft as of 8 pm Friday.  Flood stage is 9 ft.  

Chase County remains in a countywide flood warning until 10 pm Saturday evening.   

If you come across a roadway that has water over the top of it, you are reminded to not risk trying to drive through it.

11 pm Friday: Road closures announced as flooding concerns continue

The Lyon County Emergency Communications Center has announced multiple closures on area roadways due to flooding concerns.

The list includes:
*800 block of Road 165
*700 and 800 blocks of Road 160
*1600 block of Road G
*1600 block of Road H

A river-based flood warning remains in effect for the Cottonwood River at Plymouth in Chase and Lyon Counties until 1 pm Saturday. As of 5 am Saturday, the river was at 31.84 ft below the flood stage of 32 feet and dropping.

The Cottonwood River at Cottonwood Falls is in a flood warning until Saturday at 7:42 pm. As of 8 pm Friday the river was at 9.6 feet, above the flood stage of 9 ft.

The river should recede below flood stage late Saturday.

A third warning remains in effect for the Cottonwood River in Emporia until Sunday afternoon. The river was last observed at 20.5 ft, above the flood stage of 20 ft. The river is expected to crest at 22 ft Saturday morning and should drop below flood stage by Sunday afternoon.

Chase County remains in a countywide flood warning until 10 pm Saturday evening.

5 pm Friday: 

Flooding concerns continue for two area rivers Friday through the majority of the weekend.

A river-based flood warning is in place for the Cottonwood River at Plymouth in Chase and Lyon Counties until 1 pm Saturday. As of 5 pm Friday, the river was at 31.74 ft below the flood stage of 32 feet.

The river is projected to crest at 32.2 ft and is expected to drop below flood stage early Saturday morning.

The Cottonwood River at Cottonwood Falls is in a flood warning until Saturday at 7:42 pm. As of 5 pm Friday the river was at 9.8 feet, above the flood stage of 9 ft.

The river should recede below flood stage late Friday.

A third warning remains in effect for the Cottonwood River in Emporia until 10 pm Monday evening.  The river was last observed at 18.64 ft, below the flood stage of 20 ft.   The river is expected to crest at 23.8 ft Saturday morning and should drop below flood stage by Sunday afternoon.

Chase County remains in a countywide flood warning until 10 pm Saturday evening.

8:30 am Friday: RAINFALL TOTALS VARY ACROSS KVOE LISTENING AREA; RIVER BASED FLOOD WARNINGS IN EFFECT THROUGH LYON AND CHASE COUNTY

Area rainfall over the past 48-hours has led to some impressive totals across the KVOE listening area. 

Half an inch of rainfall was reported at the KVOE studios since Thursday.  Other area totals include: 

*6.12 inches four miles north of Strong City
*3 inches in Thorndale 
*2.70 inches in Cottonwood Falls 
*1.30 inches in Allen 
*1.10 inches on North East Weaver St. in Emporia

 

Chase and Marion County are under a flood warning until 10 pm Saturday.
Chase county emergency management is reporting ongoing flooding across a large part of the county. Several roads have been closed.

A river-based flood warning is in place for the Cottonwood River at Plymouth in Chase and Lyon Counties until 7:25 am Saturday.  
The river is projected to crest at 32.2 ft Friday afternoon and is expected to drop below flood stage early Saturday morning.

A flood warning has been issued for the Cottonwood River at Emporia beginning at 6:45p Friday until Sunday Morning. The river is forecasted to rise above the flood stage of 20 feet by Friday evening and continue to rise to near 22 feet by early Saturday morning. The river will fall below flood stage by Saturday afternoon.
