No matter what the circumstances, if you hear a fire alarm residents are reminded to follow proper fire safety measures to the letter.

Emporia Fire Marshall Reason Bradford recently spoke with KVOE News and explained that not every fire alarm is necessarily triggered by a fire. Bradford says there are a number of factors that can cause a false alarm including dust and steam.

Despite the possibility of a false alarm, Bradford explains that anytime an alarm sounds it should always be taken seriously.

Bradford adds this does not only pertain to alarms inside large buildings. He says smoke detectors inside a home are also susceptible to false reads due to dust, smoke from cooking food and even time.

Bradford explains residents should never remove batteries from a smoke detector and says there are certain areas of a home individuals should avoid placing smoke detectors to limit the potential of a false alarm.

In the same sense, Bradford explains there are areas where individuals are required to place detectors for their own safety. This includes having detectors both inside and outside of bedrooms and one detector on every floor of a home so you may be alerted to a potential fire no matter where it may originate.
