No outdoor burns today: red flag warnings posted areawide National Weather Service graphic

A combination of high winds and dry grasses has the area fire danger at extreme levels Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings and wind advisories for Lyon and all surrounding counties from 9 am to 6 pm. Outdoor burns will not be allowed anywhere in the area Wednesday. Weather Service meteorologist Kris Craven is asking people to be extra careful with anything fire-related.

Winds will be steadily in the 20-30 mph range with gusts as high as 50 mph. Humidity levels will be under 30 percent and grasses have been drying out now for two months, with only spotty rainfall over that time.

Chase County had already announced a burn ban Tuesday through 8 am Friday, while Osage County had issued a separate burn ban from Tuesday to 8 am Wednesday.

The wind advisories, meanwhile, reflect the potential for downed tree limbs and resulting power outages, as well as travel difficulties for high-profile vehicles.
