Area firefighters have had a busy start to the week for grass fires.
On Monday, fire crews had to battle five out-of-control grass fires just in Lyon County. The count Tuesday was four, including two near one intersection.
Firefighters went twice to Roads 210 and D after grass fires were reported around 1:45 pm and 4:30 pm. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says both incidents were initially controlled burns that went out of control. There was one out-of-control grass fire that developed near that intersection Monday.
Fire crews also went to the 2200 block of East US Highway 50 shortly before 4 pm after a controlled burn got into a tree line. That fire was contained quickly with minimal damage.
Firefighters made quick work of a grass fire that developed around 4:15 pm near the Merchant Street exit on Interstate 35. The cause of that fire is unclear.
No injuries took place with any of these fires.
Firefighters are urging caution with anything fire-related leading into and through Wednesday. Low humidity levels and ongoing dry conditions will combine with winds as high as 45 mph to make for dangerous fire conditions.
