Emporian injured in Turnpike wreck

An Emporia man was hospitalized after a crash on the Kansas Turnpike in southern Osage County on Thursday evening.
The Turnpike Authority says the wreck happened at mile marker 156, nearly 30 miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate, at 6:45 pm. According to the KTA crash log, 62-year-old Douglas Haynes was southbound and using the passing lane when he veered hard to the right to avoid a deer. His SUV went into a ditch before it rolled onto its side.
Haynes was taken to Newman Regional Health for observation and treatment. The hospital does not release patient conditions to the media.
A reported injury crash involving an Emporia woman earlier in the day turned out to be not as serious as first thought. Shortly after 4 am, 26-year-old Olivia Norgren was southbound and had just passed the Emporia service exit when she fell asleep at the wheel. Her car drifted off the highway and down an embankment.
Norgren was treated at the scene and declined a hospital trip afterward.
