ERC gets first look at newly installed scoreboard at Soden's Grove

A new LED scoreboard was installed Monday at Jones Field at Soden's Grove.

The Emporia Recreation Commission heard an update from director Tom McEvoy on it at their monthly board meeting Monday night. McEvoy says the timing couldn't be better with plenty of baseball games coming up.

The new scoreboard was installed in about five hours. Electricity for the new scoreboard will be installed Tuesday and McEvoy says the scoreboard should last for several years.

Former city attorney Blaise Plummer also updated the ERC on a transfer of the deed for the TRYSA sports complex over to the city. Once completed the ERC will manage the property and has plans for future capital improvements. Plummer says he's pleased that the process is moving along.

Plummer says they hope to have the deed transfer completed sometime this summer.

The ERC also got their first overview of the 2017-2018 fiscal year budget from McEvoy which will come back for approval next month as the new fiscal year begins July 1.

In new business, the ERC approved a lease on two cross over vehicles by a 5-0 vote. Daphne Mertens and Teresa Briggs from Healthier Lyon County also addressed the ERC at the request of the City Commission about their proposal to adopt a 30-foot buffer zone around playgrounds and any outdoor facility where youth activities are held. The ERC said they would consider adding the proposal to their next agenda.

The next ERC meeting will take place June 19 at 5:30 p.m.
