Limited labor force makes Emporia a difficult alternative for new Tyson poultry complex

Earlier this month the Tonganoxie City Council approved a resolution to oppose Tyson Foods' attempt to build a $320 million poultry complex.
The company is now seeking alternative locations. Tyson already operates a meat processing plant in Emporia. Asked whether or not the city could support a project of this size, Regional Development Association President Kent Heerman, says it would be difficult.
According to Heerman, Lyon County has a total labor force of 17,000 people. He says there are still question marks to what kind of wages such a plant would bring.
Heerman says he can't comment specifically to whether or not Tyson has formally reached out to the Emporia area. The RDA will hold its next meeting at 7 a.m. Friday.
