Blackhawk helicopters stop at FHTC

Folks driving around the Flint Hills Technical College main campus in west Emporia got a rare sight Wednesday.
The Kansas Army National Guard brought two Blackhawk helicopters to town as part of a recruitment and information effort during the Wrangler SPC Conference. National Guard Capt. Chris Koochel says the choppers draw a lot of attention wherever the National Guard goes.
College President Dr. Dean Hollenbeck tells KVOE News the college is pleased to work with students considering the military as well as service men and women looking to go back to school.
Representatives of area school districts, Emporia city and Lyon County leaders had a chance to take rides in the helicopters Wednesday afternoon.
The Kansas Army National Guard now uses the Blackhawk for disaster relief efforts, including grass fires and tornadoes. The UH60 on display in Emporia on Wednesday has a cruising speed of around 150 knots and carries a total gross weight of 22,000 pounds.
