UPDATE: Emporia Christian School to resume classes Friday

School will resume as normal on Friday for students at Emporia Christian School.

This after a major water line break on the second floor of the building late Wednesday night forced the cancellation of classes for third through eighth graders today (Th). After a day of cleanup and drying things out, principal Larry Ellis says they felt conditions are safe enough to let kids return to class on Friday.

A janitor discovered a water leak from an upstairs fountain late Wednesday night causing water to seep into the music room and fifth and sixth grade classrooms. Ellis says the age of the carpet is unknown and also doesn't have padding underneath it.

Classes were cancelled for many Emporia Christian School students Thursday following a water line break on the second floor.

A janitor discovered an overflowing water fountain around 10 p.m. which left about a half inch of water standing over the carpet. The water seeped into the music room and the fifth and sixth grade classroom, which happen to be at opposite ends of the building. Principal Larry Ellis tells KVOE at this point they don't have an estimate on damage.

Ellis says the age of the carpet is unknown and there is no padding underneath it. It has caused some staining to ceiling tiles on the first floor.  Students in grades 3 through 8 were out of class Thursday. All other classes were in session. Parents of Emporia Christian School students can call the school at 342-5353 if they need more information.

7 a.m. Thursday
A water line issue is keeping many Emporia christian School students home Thursday.

Classes in grades 3-8 are canceled. Students in preschool, kindergarten, first grade and second grade are still expected to attend.

Principal Larry Ellis tells KVOE News there was a water line break on the second floor. A janitor noticed a rushing sound on the second floor around 10 pm and discovered an overflowing water fountain. Ellis says the second-floor carpet was totally flooded. The water also got into the music room and the grades 5 and 6 classroom, which happen to be at opposite ends of the building.

Ellis says the school is fortunate because the damage appears to be limited to the carpet on the second floor. There is no apparent damage to any equipment on the second floor and there is no apparent damage to anything on the first floor.

School staffers worked into the early morning hours on initial cleanup. The school will call a professional carpet cleaner for additional work today with the hope of getting affected students back in class Friday. The school will also call an insurance adjustor.
