ALDI reportedly seeking new location in Emporia

A rezoning request approved in December by the Emporia Planning Commission could pave the way for a new location for an existing Emporia business.

Emporia Planning and Zoning Specialist Joe Foster confirmed Friday that a developer working on behalf of Aldi is interested in the property at the southwest corner of 24th and Industrial Road. The property is currently owned by the First Church of the Nazarene. Foster explains what still must be approved before the relocation can become a reality.

 

The property at 24th and Industrial is currently zoned as low-density residential but the developer is seeking to have it become C-3 commercial. If approved the church would remain with the eastern half of the property developed for commercial use. The planning commission is waiting for a minor plat to be approved before taking both items to the Emporia City Commission for approval next month. 

 
 
Aldi Corporate's Olathe Division Vice President Mark Bersted tells KVOE News in a statement: "Our plans for our Emporia location haven't been solidified yet."
 
Bersted says additional details will be released when the company has more information. 

Aldi currently has a store at 1324 Industrial Road in the Emporia West Plaza shopping center. Last February, Aldi announced a $1.6 billion investment in its stores, with an extensive plan to remodel and expand more than 1,300 U.S. stores by 2020. The company says it has seen a 60 percent increase in customers since 2013.
