Emporia educators demonstrating award-winning teaching skills

A number of Emporia educators have recently been awarded for their hard work in the classroom. On Tuesday those educators appeared on the Emporia Showcase on KVOE.
Emporia High math teacher Kelly Oberheu recently got a surprise phone call from the Kansas Education Commissioner informing her she had received the Kansas Horizon Award. The honor recognizes exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding. Oberheu says her mission is to build trusting relationships with her students.
Two Emporia educators were recently nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year. Riverside special education teacher Kelly Olson says she tries to keep her students included in all activities, something she takes great pride in.
Emporia High audio/video communications teacher Laura Schwinn says giving students real-world experiences is important, and that's aided by changing technology.
Emporia High biology teacher Matt Irby echoes that technology is helping in the classroom, aided by supplemental materials easy to access at the click of a button. He says hands on learning is still his top priority.
The Emporia Showcase airs the third Tuesday of each month at 8:20 a.m. on KVOE.
