The Emporia State baseball team held on for a 10-8 win over Arkansas Monticello in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament Thursday.
Coach Bob Fornelli said they made enough plays to win.
The Hornets scored 2 runs in the 1st inning, added 2 more in the 2nd and scored 3 runs in the 3rd to take a 7-0 lead. The Hornet scored 2 more runs in the 4th and a run in the 5th to take a 10-2 lead. Monticello rallied with 3 runs in the 8th and 3 more in the 9th to make it a 10-8 game. Mack Gowing was 3 for 4 with 3 rbi.
Ryan McBroom was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. All 3 hits were doubles. Levi Ashmore was 2 for 4 with 2 rbi and 2 runs scored. Seth Holman was the winning pitcher going 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and 5 strikeouts.
Nathan Whitcomb recorded the last 3 outs for his 11th save. Coach Bob Fornelli was glad to survive and advance.
Emporia State will next play Lindenwood at 7:45p Friday.
In other games Thursday: Minnesota State 4 Central Oklahoma 0. Lindenwood 14 Southern Arkansas 5. The St. Cloud vs Missouri Western game was postponed and rescheduled for Friday morning at 10am. The rest of Fridays schedule has Arkansas Monticello playing Southern Arkansas at 1:15p. at 4:30 Central Oklahoma will play the loser of the St. Cloud and Missouri Western game.
