State basketball tourney pairings announced

The six area teams claiming substate basketball titles Saturday found out their state tournament pairings Sunday.

The 23-0 Marais des Cygnes boys secured the No. 1 seed at the Class 1A Division 1 tournament at Emporia's White Auditorium with a 65-42 win over Southern Coffey County. The Trojans face Clifton-Clyde, who come into the state tournament with a 9-13 record after beating Osborne 68-59 Saturday. Game time is 3 pm Wednesday.

The Hartford boys, meanwhile, are the No. 7 seed. The 10-13 Jaguars thumped Goessel 61-31 Saturday and will face No. 2 seed Hoxie (22-1), a 62-42 winner over Stockton. Game time Wednesday is 6:30 pm.

At the Class 2A tourney in Manhattan, the Olpe girls and boys are both No. 4 seeds. The 20-3 Olpe boys, a 42-33 winner over Bishop Seabury Academy, will play Hillsboro (20-3) at 4:45 pm Thursday.

The 20-3 Olpe girls, meanwhile, will face Meade (19-4) after beating Northern Heights 57-47 Saturday. Game time is 4:45 pm Wednesday.

At the Class 3A tournament in Hutchinson, the Council Grove Lady Braves (19-4) wrapped up the No. 6 seed after beating West Franklin 49-26 Saturday. They play Cimarron (21-2) at 8:15 pm Thursday.

The Burlington girls (21-1) have the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Division 2 tournament in Park City after topping Iola 51-38. They face Clay Center (8-14) at 3 pm Wednesday.
