Hornet shutout ends in fourth, but ESU cruises to road win

Sloppy conditions didn't stop the Emporia State Hornets in their road trip to Jefferson City, Mo., either offensively or defensively. Neither did the Lincoln Blue Tigers on their Homecoming day.

Despite a muddy field, the AFCA No. 24 Hornets dominated in all facets of the game to defeat Lincoln 52-14 in Saturday, pushing their record to 5-0 overall and in the MIAA.

ESU's passing attack didn't have the statistics seen in previous games this season -- quarterback Brent Wilson threw for just 123 yards -- but the Hornet running game stepped up with a season-high 233 yards, including 102 yards and four touchdowns from Antonio Brown.

It was Brown's running which helped to put ESU in gear offensively in the second quarter. Brown scored from one yard out twice in the period as ESU turned a 10-0 first-quarter lead into a 31-0 halftime advantage.

Lincoln, which entered Saturday's play fourth in the MIAA in rushing offense and fifth in total offense, struggled to move the ball until the second half, but five turnovers -- including two interceptions from Emporia High alum Brandon Gentz -- helped to keep the Blue Tigers out of the end zone until midway through the fourth quarter.

ESU held Lincoln to under 50 yards of offense in the first half. The Blue Tigers' 321 total yards were over 150 yards below Lincoln's season average.

Emporia State next plays Oct. 12 in a Homecoming tilt against Southwest Baptist. Coverage will begin at 1:30 pm with kickoff at 2:37 pm on Mix 104.9 FM and KVOE.com. Hornet Talk with head coach Garin Higgins airs at 12:20 pm Monday on Mix 104.9 FM and KVOE.com.
