Topeka High used two big plays to defeat the Emporia High Football team 21-17 Friday night.
Topeka High opened the game with an 84 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked. Nick Rodriguez tied the game with a 7 yard touchdown run, the extra point gave the Spartans a 7-6 lead. Topeka High would retake the lead with 54 seconds to play before halftime. Emporia High would take advantage of a short kick-off and would tie up the game with less than a second to play in the half on an 18 yard touchdown pass from Tanner Taylor to Cody Campbell. Lane Brewer gave Emporia High the lead back with a field goal in the 3rd quarter. But Topeka High would re-take the lead for good on 71 yard run by quarterback Alec Beatty. With the loss the Spartans fall to 3-3 for the season and in Centennial League play. Topeka High improves to 6-0. Emporia High opens district play next Friday night when they host Newton.
