Fast starts mean victories for ESU basketball teams Featured

Both the Emporia State men's and women's basketball teams got out of the gate quickly, and that meant victories for both squads in games Saturday night at White Auditorium.

The Lady Hornets handled Newman 82-64. After falling behind 5-2 year, the Hornets led for most of the first quarter and then used a 27-18 second quarter to take a 47-34 lead at half. The Lady Hornets were never seriously challenged after that.

Coach Toby Wynn says the start was the key.

Senior center Tyra Jones led four players in double figures with 19 points, and she added a game-high 10 rebounds for good measure. She says a little throwback game film helped to put the Lady Hornets in the right frame of mind.

Addie Lackey added 18 points, while Emily Miller chipped in 14 and Jessica Wayne had 10. Meanwhile, Emporia High graduate Braxtyn Stewart had 10 points for Newman.

The No. 25 Lady Hornets are now 6-1 on the season and avenged a 74-66 loss at Newman last year.

Meanwhile, the Hornet men also rolled, topping Rogers State 82-70. The Hornets gave up the opening bucket but used a 12-0 run midway through the first half to get all the separation they needed.

Rogers State cut the lead to five on several separate occasions, both in the first and second halves, but they got no closer.

Coach Craig Doty says the Hornets practiced with a renewed focus, and they played with that focus for most of the game.

Malik Hluchoweckyj led all scorers with 20 points. Kooper Glick had 19 points, while Hassan Thomas had 15 and a game-high 9 rebounds.

The Hornets at one point led by as many as 19 points.

The win was the third straight for ESU, which is now 4-2 for the season. Both the Hornets and Lady Hornets begin conference play Thursday as they travel to Nebraska-Kearney.
