Emporia Spartans and Lady Spartans sweep Wichita Independent Monday Featured

The Emporia High boys and girls Basketball teams both improved to 2-0 on the season with back-to-back wins over Wichita Independent Monday evening.

The Lady Spartans would manage an impressive comeback to defeat Independent 51-49 in overtime. The Lady Panthers would control the pace of the first quarter outscoring Emporia 16-5 before an 18-9 run in the second would see Emporia trail by just two 25-23 going into the half.

Both teams would trade the lead back and forth throughout the third and fourth quarters before a last-minute three-pointer by Independent senior Charlotte Taylor would send the game to overtime. Spartans’ senior Maya Tovar would score six points, including two free throws with one second remaining to seal the win for the Lady Spartans.

Emporia High had three players in double digits, Tovar led her team with 16 points, sophomore Gracie Gilpin had 12 points and junior Emily Christensen had 11 points.

Head Coach Carolyn Dorsey was proud of the win but says her team has to be more aggressive from the start.

Wichita Independent was led in scoring by junior Gosha Byczowska with 17 points.

The Emporia High boys would establish an early lead in the first and never look back as they defeated the Panthers 77-19.

The Spartans forced sixteen turnovers in the first half as they outscored Independent 47-10 going into the locker room. Emporia would hold the Panthers scoreless in the third and allowed just nine points in the fourth to pick up their second win of the season.

Three Spartan scorers ended the night in double digits including junior Charles Snyder with 20 points. Junior Camden Kirmer finished with 17 points while senior Connor Hoyt had 11.

Coach Beau Welch says his team showed a lot of maturity throughout the contest.

Wichita Independent was led in scoring by juniors Jimmy Guinn and Gage Solomon with six points each.

The win was the 100th for Coach Welch as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Emporia High School.

Emporia High returns to action when they travel to Hesston to face Nickerson Thursday.
