Emporia State Basketball teams split with Nebraska Kearney in season openers Featured

The Emporia State basketball teams split with Nebraska Kearney Thursday night.

Nebraska Kearney won the womens game 59-54 in a game of runs.
Kearney would build a 10 point lead in the 2nd quarter.
Emporia State would use a 14-0 in the 3rd quarter to turn a 6 point halftime deficit into a 6 point lead.
Kearney answered with a 8-2 run to tie the game at 44 going to the 4th quarter.
Kearney closed out the game on a 9-3 run to seal the win.
Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn said the defense was good, the offense needs to improve.

Emporia State was led in scoring by Tre'Zure Jobe with 22 points. Kali Martin added 11 points and Daley Handy finished with 10 points.
The Lady Hornets were scheduled to play at Fort Hays State Saturday, but that game has been postponed due to COVID protocol.

In the mens game Emporia State used a 12-0 run in the first half to build a lead they would not give up on the way to a 69-57 win. The Hornets led by as many as 19 points in the first half but had to hold off a 2nd half run by Nebraska Kearney to earn the win.
Emporia State Coach Craig Doty called it a good season opening win.

Austin Downing led Emporia State in scoring with 14 points. Jumah'Ri Turner added 11 points.
The Hornets play at Fort Hays State Saturday with tip-off at 4pm.
