State High School softball and baseball tournaments are scheduled to begin Thursday.
The Emporia American Legion baseball team will hold tryouts this Sunday beginning at 5:30 at Sodens Grove. A parents meeting will be held Thursday evening beginning at 7pm at Emporia High School. The Senior Legion team is open to those 19 and under. The Junior Legion team is open to those 16 to 13 years old.
For the 17th straight season the Emporia State football team finished in the top 50 in the nation in average attendance. The Hornets finished 33rd in division II. An average of 5,011 fans per game saw Emporia State play five games on Jones Field at Welch Stadium in 2014. It was the third straight year the Hornets averaged over 5,000 fans per home game. Emporia State outdrew 39 NCAA Division I FCS schools.

Emporia High Senior Jade Smith has been named to the All Centennial League softball team. She is a second team selection.
The New York Yankees completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 win. Alex Rodriguezs' 3 run home-run in the 3rd inning was the difference. Mike Moustakas hit a solo homerun in the first and Lorenzo Cain scored in the 8th inning for the Royals who have now lost 4 in a row. They are off until Friday when they play the Cubs in Chicago.
Fridays schedule for the State High School softball and baseball tournaments have been altered due to the forecast for rain.
For the first time this season the Kansas City Royals have lost 3 game in a row, after the New York Yankees defeated the Royals 5-1 Tuesday night.
