Wichita State seniors Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet along with KU Senior Perry Ellis have been named to the preseason watch list for the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award. The annual player of the year award was established in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons.

The United States picked up 6 more medals Wednesday at the Rio Olympics. Two were Gold Kristin Armstrong in the womens Cycling road time trials and another swimming gold the womens 4x200 free relay.

 


 

Two Emporia High volleyball players and an area High School volleyball player will be playing in the Kansas Volleyball Association All-Star match Saturday.

 

The Emporia High girls diving team opened their season Wednesday and two divers qualified for State. 

 

For the first time in Big -12 history four of five members of the mens basketball All-Big 12 First Team from the previous season return. Leading the way is the 2014-15 Big 12 Player of the Year and this year’s preseason selection for player of the year, Buddy Hield of Oklahoma.

Emporia States Taysean Goodwin will be running in the finals of the 400 meter dash. He had the 8th fastest time in the prelims Thursday. Thomas LaRoche will be running in the finals of the 800 meter run. He had the 5th fastest time in Thursday Prelims. The Finals will be held Saturday.

Emporia High Seniors Tanner Taylor and Max Brown have been named to the Academic All-State team by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

The State boys diving meet begins Thursday in Topeka. Emporia High will have two divers competing.

 

In High School football play-off action Tuesday night two area teams were eliminated, one advances.

Argonia defeated Hartford 48-0.

West Elk out scored Marais des Cygnes Valley 62-14.

Burlingame defeated Rock Hills 40-18. The Bearcats play at Central Burden Saturday.

Chase County and Burlington earned trips to state by winning regional tournaments Tuesday.
