
The season came to an end for the Emporia High girls basketball team Wednesday last night, but they did not go down without a fight. Wichita Heights out scored the Lady Spartans 67-60 in a 5A Semi-final sub-state game.
The Emporia State womens tennis team hosted Ottawa in a duel Wednesday, winning all 5 matches played.
For the 3rd straight week Kevin Harvick was the winner of the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup series race. He won Sundays race at Phoneix. Kyle Busch was 2nd and Chase Elliott was 3rd. Clint Bowyer finished in 6th place.
Emporia State introduced Toby Wynn Monday as their 7th Head Womens basketball Coach.
Emporia State Athletic Director Kent Weiser has announced the hiring of Toby Wynn as the next Head Womens Basketball Coach.
In State Volleyball play Waverly finished in 3rd place at the 1A Division I tournament. They defeated LaCrosse in the consolation final after losing to Goessel in the the semi-finals. Goessel won the 1A Division 1 title. The other state champions are in 6A Blue Valley West, In 5A St. James Academy, in 4A Division 1 Bishop Miege, in 4A Division II Hayden, in 3A Garden Plain, 2A Central Plains and in 1A Division II Grainfield Wheatland.
For the second year in a row Olpe High Schools Kyler True is the 2A State Cross Country Champion. His teammate Zachary Nuessen finished in 5th place. As a team the Olpe boys finished in 5th place. The Olpe girls finished in 7th place. They were led by Brittany White-Dold who finished in 19th place. The Council Grove boys finished in 3rd place at 3A. Travis Gyuran of Council Grove finished in 11th place. The Osage City girls finished in 12th place. They were led by Joy Steele who finished in 9th place. Othe top 20 finishes belonged to Madelyn Montgomery of Lyndon finished in 14th place and Mariah Lindburg of Northern Heights finished in 16th place.
Now that 2014 is here, the first competition of the new year is just around the corner for Emporia State and Emporia High teams.
Emporia State has released the 2014 football schedule. The Hornets kick-off the season on Thursday September 4th at home against Missouri Southern.
The 2010 National Champion Emporia State womens basketball team will be inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame. The team will be recognized during the semifinals of the MIAA Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 7 in Municipal Auditorium.
20 members of the Emporia State football team have been named to the All MIAA team. Four are first team selections: Senior Receiver Ray Ray Davis, Freshman offensive lineman Jarret Stastny, Senior linebacker Jordan Sanders and Senior Saftey Chris Poston.
The Emporia High wrestling team began the second day of Newton Tournament of Champions in 9th place. Two Spartans will be wrestling for Championships. Garrett Whitson at 132 pounds and Isaac Russell at 138 pounds. Only 1 Spartan has been eliminated. Sage Eckman after losing in the semi-finals was disqualified. The other 9 Spartan wrestlers were still alive on the consolation side of the bracket.
At the State swim meet Friday Emporia Highs Rage Keister and Matt Finley qualified for 2nd swims.
Wichita State seniors Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet along with KU Senior Perry Ellis have been named to the preseason watch list for the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award. The annual player of the year award was established in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons.
